Poodle is a relatively healthy breed.

But if you really want to give your poodle the best odds for a healthy life; make certain you only adopt your poodle from a reputable, purebred breeder of poodles.

An ethical breeder (of any dog breed) will provide you with certified, medical evidence of the absence of genetic diseases, hip dysplasia, thyroid and heart health, etc., for both parents.

Healthy poodles make for happy and energetic companions. I consider my poodles my best friends… mostly because they have the energy to keep up with me. But let’s be honest… usually they surpass me in the energy department!
The smaller varieties of poodle have very long life expectancies. I’m talkin’ 14-18 years of fun loving poodle companionship!
The standard size variety have a life expectancy of about 12-14 years. And you can be sure that those years will be filled up in active adventure with a healthy standard poodle.

The poodle is an ancient breed of dog.

Did you know? The poodle is the national dog of France.
Not too surprising, huh?

But! the history of the poodle breed goes back further… much further… than the country of France itself.

And, here’s a fun fact; in France the poodle is called the caniche. Same exact dog, just a different name.

There is compelling evidence that the breed itself has been around more than 100 years B.C.E.! Images of a curly coated dog with shaved hindquarters and hairy bracelets on his legs, is found on ancient Roman coins. Early poodles are even depicted on artwork from Pompeii!

Dog breeds we recognize today as hunters or retrievers of water fowl… your Labrador or Golden retrievers, for example… all originated from the ancient poodle.
The poodle breed is the first social influencer for the retrieving dogs we know today!
